SUBJECT: Wanted Man Arrested after Getting Stuck in Chimney
RELEASE NUMBER: 2020-NR-043
CONTACT: Col. Noah Robinson / Major Jason Ashworth
AUTHORITY: Sheriff Dave Wedding

A wanted man is now in custody after becoming stuck in a chimney while attempting to hide from law enforcement.

On Thursday, August 06, 2020 Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Evansville Police Department officers and an Indiana State Police trooper assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force went to 820 E. Riverside Drive in order to attempt arrest warrant service on Cody Methanial Sargent. Sargent was wanted for violating the terms of his probation, which stemmed from a criminal criminal conviction on charges of Dealing Narcotics, Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Paraphernalia.

While hiding in the house and attempting to avoid capture, Sargent tried to escape by climbing up the fireplace chimney. Sargent became lodged three-quarters way up and was unable to free himself. Task Force members requested assistance from the Evansville Fire Department, who were able to partially dismantle the chimney and rescue Sargent.

Sargent was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and later booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. Sargent is being held without bond.
