AUTHORITY: Sheriff Dave Wedding

At approximately 10:40 this morning the Evansville Police Department attempted to stop a white Dodge Ram for a traffic infraction near the intersection of Morgan Avenue and Oak Hill Road. The driver, identified as Michael Johnson, fled the traffic stop using his vehicle and the decision was made to not pursue.

Based upon on a last reported sighting near US 41 and Mount Pleasant Road a Sheriff’s deputy was searching for the suspect in the area of Darmstadt Road and Mohr Road when his patrol car was nearly struck by Johnson’s vehicle has he carelessly sped down Darmstadt Road. By the time the deputy caught up to Johnson’s vehicle, it had already struck another vehicle near the intersection of Mount Pleasant Road. The on-scene investigation determined that the collision occurred as Johnson attempted to pass a northbound vehicle in the southbound lane of travel and struck an oncoming sport utility vehicle. The driver of the sport utility vehicle was able to avoid a head-on collision, but the impact was significant to the driver’s side. Johnson and the two occupants of the sport utility vehicle were transported to local hospitals for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

Scott Township Fire Department, McCutchanville Fire Department, and AMR all responded to the scene of the crash. The Sheriff’s Office is ongoing as drugs and alcohol is suspected as a factor in the incident.
